Learn about
The Collison Repair industry is a subsidiary of the Automotive Industry. In simple terms, Collision Repair is concentrated on the repair and/or restoration of the body of the vehicle.
It includes two pathways which have traditionally been referred to as “Panel Beater” (Collision Repair Technician) or “Vehicle Painter” (Automotive Refinisher). The industry is progressive, evolving, high tech, fast paced, global and full of awesome Trade Professionals and employers.
To become and Automotive Refinisher or a Collision Repair Technician you will complete an apprenticeship.
An Industry Training Provider, in this case MITO Te Pukenga, will work alongside you and your employer to oversee your qualification. Generally, people complete their apprenticeship in 3- 4 years, though this is completely in your hands, you could finish in less time if you get stuck in!
If you like cars, working with your hands, and have a good eye for detail, these trades might be for you!

Collision Repair Technicians are often referred to as "Panel Beaters" though this does not give the trade enough credit, as you will do much, much more than simply "beat panels". This is a modern, high-tech industry with exciting technology, high workplace safety standards, diverse and interesting work and quality workplaces.
If you enjoy working with your hands, being physical, working in fast paced environments, have a willingness to learn and a great attitude (a love of cars will also help), then this may be the trade for you!

Automotive Refinishers are often referred to as "Vehicle Painters". In this trade you will focus much of your energy to the exterior of a vehicle, whether it be a commercial vehicle such as a bus or a truck, or a private vehicle such as a car or van. The world is your oyster when it comes to what you can paint as an Automotive Refinisher!
You will work in a high tech, exciting, career which is continually evolving. You will spend time in your workshop and spray booth in a fast-paced workshop environment, preparing vehicles for paint by getting the panel to a perfect finish, preparing and matching paints, spray painting and polishing to perfection! This part of the industry can be very rewarding for those who enjoy seeing a project through to completion and sitting back and admiring the finished result!
